We received an unprecedented number of enquiries and requests for help in 2016 which must reflect the growing crisis in rehoming. We had more requests too for advice and pet bereavement counselling. This time of year is even more poignant for anyone who has lost a pet or had to rehome one, and we feel for them deeply.

Our hope for 2017 is that people will think more carefully before choosing their family pet. Our experience over the Christmas season has shown that we still have a long way to go, despite the negative publicity surrounding puppy farming. In an ideal world we wouldn’t need to exist, but the reality is very different. We hope too for an even greater understanding of dog behaviour and a dog’s needs which in turn would reflect in the number of dogs coming to us.

In the New Year we will be meeting with Robert Buckland QC MP, Solicitor General for England and Wales to discuss how we can help in regard to puppy farming and matters concerning rescues. Our initial meeting at the beginning of December was very encouraging.

Here’s wishing you a happy, healthy, peaceful new year from us all at Westie ReHoming.

SOME NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS – QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR DOG

Keep Up With Health Care
Proper health care is essential for your dog. Don’t bombard him with excessive chemicals, but have him examined by a vet at least once a year. In between visits, keep an eye out for any possible signs of sickness, and call your vet if you notice anything amiss.

Keep Your Dog at a Healthy Weight
Many people find chubby dogs cute, but those extra pounds are very bad for your pet’s health. Dogs that are overweight or obese face higher risks of developing several serious health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and liver trouble. If you know or suspect that your dog is losing his waistline cut down on the amount he is fed. Always feed according to condition.

Provide Proper Exercise
Exercise is important to your dog’s physical and mental health and well-being. While exercise requirements will depend on his age, weight, health, and breed, all dogs need some form of daily activity. A good walk will help to keep your dog stimulated and active. It’s also a great way for you to relax and de-stress. Allow your dog time to ‘smell the roses’ and just enjoy the moment.

Play
This one applies to both people and pets! Life can get pretty hectic, so be sure to make time for fun. Play a game of hide and seek with your buddy, or play tag with him. This will be just as good for you as it is for him. Try tracking or nosework which terriers really enjoy.

Visit New Places
It’s no secret that dogs love to explore! Take time to relax and unwind and enjoy a change of scenery together occasionally.

Enjoy Time With Your Dog More
Sadly, the time that we have with our dogs is limited. Make it your resolution to appreciate and enjoy every day that you are lucky enough to spend with your dog. Have new adventures together. Spend time playing, and spend time relaxing, explore new places and try new things. Spend some quality time together.

The company of a dog is a gift, take time to enjoy it while you can.
