SCRUFF 7/3/2000 – 4/5/2014

Scruff was suffering from Diabetes for the last three and a half years, Epilepsy and Dementia more recently, giving him 10 units of insulin twice a day. Bank holiday Sunday we were all in the sunshine and the little chap had a stroke, he couldn’t stand up. Carol and I had been expecting this day so had requested some sedatives from the vet, I stayed with him cuddling him right to the end. Scruff has been my constant companion for 14 years, he put up with his total blindness and ailments with so much courage, and would always bounce back, but this last year he hasn’t bounced back as high. What more could this world chuck at him!! He can now see again and is running around chasing bunnies once again.
Thankfully we have Sweetie, the bonkers spaniel, who has been a dream and knows how we feel and she is nursing us out of the sadness. Scruff found us when we were particularly low after the sudden death of another pet, and I wrote this for him last week. YOU FOUND US AT THE START OF SPRING
LIFTING US FROM DEATH’S DARK STING
LIGHTING UP OUR LIFE YOU MADE US LIVE AGAIN
GENTLY EASING US AWAY FROM LOSS AND PAIN
WE’D WALK FOR MILES IN THE RAIN AND SNOW
THROUGH THE WOODS AND FIELDS WE’D FEEL THE WIND BLOW
IN THE DARKEST DAY YOU SHONE LIKE THE SUN
LYING BY THE FIRESIDE WHEN THE DAY WAS DONE

NOW YOU ARE GONE WE WILL TRY TO BE STRONG
ALTHOUGH THE NIGHT WILL BE DARK AND LONG
UNTIL AT LAST WE ALL MEET ONCE MORE
ON THAT DISTANT GOLDEN FAR OFF SHORE

Syd and Carol
